back to school - almost

Fall begins in August

I used to have a love/hate relationship with the month of August. I hated it because it was long and hot. I loved it because we took our family vacation in August and secretly I was excited about going back to school in September. How things have been different for my kids! August is still long and hot, but they have never known a summer vacation and to make things worse, they have to go back to school in the hottest part of the summer.

I suppose we can blame air conditioned schools for the reason schools start the fall semester earlier – that and the new breaks kids now enjoy. We didn’t have a fall break and our Thanksgiving break lasted only two days instead of the three. Also our Christmas break lasted two weeks, period.

One problem with an early school start is that it really messes with fall sports. I remember bundling up in coats and blankets to see those last couple of football games. Now the season is over before the night air has much of a nip to it. Athletes must also endure after school practices in mid-90 degree heat – not to mention spectators melting watching cross country meets, soccer games, and tennis matches.

The state of Virginia has a law requiring public school to open after Labor Day. I thought this was a wonderful idea until I learned it had nothing to do with the hot weather or off days. That state enjoys its tourism dollars, and who works in the theme parks and restaurants and other attractions – students.

Well, we can’t do anything to change it. Matt’s school begins August 16. Other than the fact he hasn’t yet finished his summer reading books, I think he’s ready to go back. I know he’ll want to see all his friends and check out the new students. He’s ready to be a sophomore. And I hope he’s ready to finally WANT to make good grades. He’s ready to have a killer cross country season; he’s worked all summer to better his chances at making the top 10 at the state tournament. As for me, I’m ready to get my computer back and enjoy a bit more quiet. Who knows, perhaps I’ll be able to write more regularly. Hmmmm. Perhaps this going back to school early idea might have advantages after all. We shall see.
